I’m getting ready to fly…in an airplane, that is. Travel usually spurs me to change up my music playlist a little. So I spent the better part of the morning rummaging through iTunes, spending money at the click of a button! Oh my.
I love to hear what other people are listening to, so I thought I’d share my most recent playlist with you.
My last playlist was called “Moving On.” It was full of music meant to redirect me from my own woes and laments (because enough already! you know?) and turn my attention instead to praising God, exalting Him for His goodness, faithfulness and power. I had listened to that playlist for about six months (and I had moved on…and on and on!), so I decided it was high time for some new tunes.
The Words that Resonate with Me Now
Recently I’ve had a hankering for the hymns of my youth. I’ve continued to desire to praise God straight on, but I want to do it with some full-on, biblical and sound theology. And I desire the words to flow easily from my tongue because they are etched there from years gone by. These are the words feeding my soul and expressing my heart right now:
Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be,
Let that grace now like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love.
Here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above. (Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing)
and
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty gain,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. (Be Thou My Vision)
and
Just as I am, Thou wilt receive
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve
Because Thy promise I believe
O Lamb of God, I come, I come (Just as I Am)
But I’ve also found some newer songs with powerful lyrics:
Oh, God of mine, I’ll have no idols
Oh, God of mine, come lead the way
Oh, God of mine, I’m greatly humbled
This sinner’s heart You came to save. (O God of Mine)
and
Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;
Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us—
Truths unchanged from the dawn of time
That will echo down through eternity.
And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises,
And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us.
Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built
And the earth is filled with Your glory. (Speak O Lord)
and
I followed my heart but it led me astray
I should not have gone but I went anyway
Now I find myself here all battered and bruised.
I was chasing the wind, I should have been chasing you.
I should have been chasing you.You are, you are the well
You are the well that never runs dry
You are, you are the well
You are the well that never runs dry.
(The Well)
My playlist
Here’s my playlist, which I’ve creatively entitled Summer 2016:
I have a treat for you. I found this video of J.J. Heller’s “The Well” on my Facebook feed the other day and fell in love with it. So you’ll see that it’s in my playlist above. I enjoy a lot of J.J.’s music. She has a beautiful, natural intonation and she writes most of her songs. I think you’ll enjoy this one, too. She gets a little silly in this video, but, hey, I like it!!
Isaiah told the people, “Sing to the Lord a brand new song!” in Isaiah 42:10. And the Psalms encourage us over and over to sing to the Lord new expressions of our gratitude, obedience, amazement and worship. Is it time for you to add some new songs to your playlist? I’d love to know what you are humming along to these days.
I love music! Hillary Scott’s “Thy Will” is a favorite right now and John Wallers “As for Me and My House” and “crazy faith” I’m loving. “King of the world” by Natalie grant is another favorite right now. Anything by Lauren daigle is always amazing! Have a great trip!
Ahh, I love Lauren Daigle’s music, too. I think I just heard Thy Will for the first time yesterday. I may have to add that one to my playlist.
