We were two peas in a pod. She was the kindred spirit Anne of Green Gables had sent me looking for. We share a birthday, and we laughingly chided our husbands that even we couldn’t have planned that.
Autumn is filled with memories that my friend and I created over the years. It was in the fall that we ran our first 5k together. We had watched football side by side on bleachers, hiked woodsy trails, shared fried Twinkies at the state fair and gathered our families together over my homemade soup or her famous chili dogs.
But it was also fall when things changed.
I’m all for change if it promises something beautiful. I think that’s why we perk up when the green leaves of summer begin turning multiple hues of autumn. We know something desirable follows, so we order a pumpkin spice latte and take a walk in the crisp autumn air, celebrating the changes to come.
But only a few weeks after the leaves have turned those glorious shades of yellow, orange and red, another change occurs. The winds of winter blow the color off the trees, leaving them barren and black. We order a peppermint latte and dash inside, escaping the cold and the bleak scenery.
Some changes are beautiful and promising. Others we run from.
